Common Practice was invited to contribute a model to the Architects Index of Modelmaking ‘Making Matters’ exhibition, exploring how making by hand can help us communicate, collaborate and think through design.
In a world where AI and digital renders are commonplace, the public perception of these images is becoming a little worn. The disappointing “render vs reality” meme is now widely understood. Renders, particularly when produced by developers, start to feel detached from the reality of a building.
For us, making matters because a physical model is immediately legible. You can pick it up, turn it around, and understand the qualities (or flaws) of an idea immediately.
There’s something grounding about the rough edges, the mistakes that lead to discoveries, and the moment a form suddenly makes sense when it’s sitting on the table instead of on a screen.
Yan was also part of a panel discussion, entitled ‘Making As Consequence’, discussing the importance of collaboration and the role physical models play in a smaller architectural practice.
