This project began with a much-loved but tired Victorian semi in Chorlton that had lost some of its original character. The approach was as much about bringing the existing house back to life as adding something new. Render was carefully removed, brickwork repointed and original arched heads and decorative brick detailing reinstated.
To the rear, a playful new extension brings a distinctly contemporary note. Natural timber cladding is paired with bright red-framed windows, adding warmth, colour and a little personality to the house and, hopefully, some sunshine on even the greyest Manchester day.
The windows are more than a splash of colour. Each one slides neatly into a central pocket, allowing the frames to disappear completely and opening the extension to the garden.
The result is a house that feels renewed rather than reinvented, its Victorian character restored, with a new chapter added at the back.
