This project transforms a charming yet awkward Arts & Crafts home through a playful two-storey side and rear extension. The original house, defined by its steep catslide roof, asymmetrical form, and delightful mix of tall, corner, and porthole windows, offered a rich architectural language to build upon. Our approach was to celebrate these eclectic features—amplifying the building’s inherent character while resolving the internal layout and creating new bedrooms via a loft conversion.
Internally, the layout had been clumsily opened up, leaving bulky downstands and poorly connected rooms. The new design rationalises the plan, reconstructing key structural elements to create a coherent flow of spaces. The extension introduces a spacious kitchen and dining area, while cleverly integrated joinery conceals storage and defines zones without breaking visual continuity.
Designed for a young, growing family, the result is a sociable, comfortable home that balances openness with intimacy—where the house’s playful past meets a more refined and cohesive present.
