After undertaking a detailed assessment of how best to maximise the footprint of this plot, we undertook massing studies to assess the impact on the existing property, its attached neighbour and the surrounding context, to avoid creating the impression of over-development.

The result is a sympathetically designed single-storey rear extension which has a cranked footplate opening up to the garden. Subtle design details include a cast concrete plinth and vertical timber fins which wrap around to form a covered motorbike store (a client essential requirement!).

A loft conversion with front and rear dormer was designed with a shift in form and materiality to avoid an overbearing flat roof structure which would not have felt incongruous.

Internally, an open-plan kitchen / dining / dayroom is the heart of the house for this young family. Whilst also creating more secluded spaces away from the hustle and bustle, such as a separate snug and a home office. The spaces have been designed to allow the home to be used flexibly and adapt to the family’s needs over time.

A new staircase opens up the existing entrance providing a top-lit double height space. Small interventions like this will make a huge impact by flooding the space with natural light.

Construction due to start in autumn 2024.
