The brief was to bring an early 20th-century home up to date while making it work for multi-generational living. That meant more bedrooms, generous shared spaces and enough flexibility for different generations to spend time together without having to spend all their time together.
At the front, the approach is deliberately restrained. New extensions are carefully scaled and detailed to sit comfortably alongside the original house and its neighbours, keeping the street-facing elevation familiar.
Around the back, things loosen up. The new additions use brown brick and contemporary detailing to create a clear distinction between old and new. Rather than pretending the extension has always been there, the design gives the house a new chapter, one that reflects how the family actually lives today.
Inside, flexibility was key. Large, connected spaces give everyone room to come together, while sliding elements and changes in layout allow spaces to become smaller and more private when needed. There’s plenty of light, too, which helps the generous plan feel welcoming rather than sprawling.
The result is a house that respects where it came from without getting stuck there. The original Arts & Crafts character remains part of the story, while the new work provides the space, flexibility and comfort needed for a family whose idea of home includes more than one generation.
